Flowserve Supports China in its Push for More Sustainable Plastics

China recently banned several non-degradable single-use plastics, which has opened the pipeline for more sustainable plastic alternatives. One of those products is polybutylene succinate (PBS), a biodegradable plastic that naturally decomposes into water and carbon dioxide. PBS and other biodegradable plastics are expected to become preferred alternative materials due to their similarity to plastic and their environmental benefits.

Sustainability and energy transition benefits

Biodegradable plastics not only reduce waste, but they can also reduce the level of greenhouse gas emissions. They consume less energy and reduce carbon emissions, ultimately helping lead to decarbonization, a key energy transition pathway. While biodegradable plastics release a small amount of carbon dioxide during the composting process, the reduction in carbon emissions during the manufacturing process is far greater.

Equipping production

China has invested heavily in the production of plastic alternatives, and Flowserve is there to help. Flowserve supplies Yingkou Kanghui Petrochemical Co., Ltd. with SIHI H1000 Dry Vacuum pumps to support PBS production. PBS and other biodegradable plastics are expected to become preferred alternative materials due to their similarity to plastics and their environmental benefits. Kanghui’s production capacity of PBS is expected to rank among the top three in China and help alleviate the supply and demand gap of PBS-type biodegradable plastics.
