Obtaining a U.S. Taxpayer Identification Number

Business entities can obtain an Employer Identification Number (EIN) by completing Form SS-4.  Form SS-4 and Instructions.  Individuals must obtain either a Social Security Number (SSN) by contacting the Social Security Administration or an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) by completing Form W-7  Form W-7 and Instructions. The individual vendor should read about both identification numbers to see which one applies to the specific circumstances.
