Making the LMX Cartridge Lip Seal: How Flowserve engineers solved a critical pharmaceutical challenge
Flowserve Products
Black carbon contamination has become a significant issue with pharmaceutical and specialty chemical manufacturers. There wasn’t an existing solution that could solve it – so Flowserve engineers created one.
Product purity is everything in pharmaceutical and specialty chemical manufacturing – yet many companies face a concerning trend in their plants: black carbon dust contamination.
In many cases, contamination was generated by worn or faulty dry-contacting mechanical seals from mixers and agitators. This can result in scrapped drug batches and costly production disruptions. Even the smallest contamination can have significant consequences – both for the company and its consumers.
Manufacturers need better options for a contamination-free sealing solution. The challenge? No product existed in the market that could fully address this issue – so Flowserve engineers set out to make a solution.
Our engineering team embarked on a journey to develop a fresh design approach to handle the problem in a more direct way. Their hard work ultimately led to the LMX Cartridge Lip Seal – an advanced sealing solution designed specifically to significantly reduce the risk of carbon dust contamination.
This achievement reflects what sets Flowserve apart: our people. Through the ingenuity and dedication of our product development team, we created something that protects batch purity, improves process reliability and, most importantly, supports safer outcomes for the people who depend on critical medications and treatments.
DEVELOPING A NEW DESIGN PHILOSOPHY
Beyond disruption in production schedules and batch quality concerns for manufacturers, our team understood the broader concern: product safety. Protecting the consumers and communities that rely on these critical products was top of mind. That made our mission clear: We don’t need to just reduce the risk of contamination – we need to eliminate it.
At first, the goal sounded straightforward: create a sealing solution that could help protect product purity without making plant operations more complicated. But our team quickly realized solving a complex problem requires thinking beyond traditional methods.
Rather than making incremental improvements to traditional seal designs, our team reexamined the problem from the ground up and adopted a new design philosophy centered on contamination prevention, reliability and sustainability.

A WORTHWHILE JOURNEY OF TEAMWORK AND INGENUITY
Over the next two years, our six-member team worked tirelessly to turn an ambitious idea into a more practical, high-performing solution. Early on, the team learned to adapt quickly in a dynamic work environment. Whether it was going through design revisions or changes to the project team over time, our team always managed to work effectively together to eventually put the product into development.
Like many breakthroughs in product development, the path was not linear. Through numerous trial and error phases, the team was determined to keep innovating and moving forward.
The turning point came during the prototype stage. After months of revisions, refinements and redesigns, the team achieved test runs with zero leakage, stable temperatures and reliable performance.
When we presented the prototype to leadership, the product’s simplicity and effectiveness left a strong and lasting impression. Just as important, the design proved to not only look good in a controlled environment but also remained practical in a real-life plant setting. That was the moment the team knew it was ready for the next phase.
“I’m thrilled with the way our team effectively navigated the anticipated challenges while still delivering a solution on time and on budget. We have great people, and I’m so proud of everyone for pouring so much hard work and expertise into this. It represents the best of Flowserve,” said Garrett Marsala, Product Manager.
