Resume Best Practices
1. Ensure your resume is clear, concise and easy to read
Designing your resume to be clear, concise and easy-to-read ensures that your technical skills and achievements stand out. Doing this demonstrates strong organization abilities and efficiency – qualities highly valued at Flowserve.
Organize it into three distinct sections: Your name and contact details, your professional work experience, and a summary of both your technical and interpersonal skills.
When describing your work experience, focus on your most impactful achievements and responsibilities within five to six concise bullet points – and try to keep each bullet to no more than two lines for maximum readability.
2. Highlight relevant skills
Highlighting relevant skills is an important part of applying for any role at Flowserve. It helps us understand your qualifications while also giving us a clearer understanding of how your expertise could contribute to Flowserve’s broader business priorities of empowering critical industries. Clearly feature these skills in both your work experience and skills sections to demonstrate that you understand the role’s requirements and can apply your capabilities in meaningful ways. It's important to remember that every position is different, and each role may require specific skill sets. To make your resume stand out, prioritize listing the skills highlighted in the job posting and feature them prominently at the top of your skills section.
For example: If you’re an engineer, you could enhance your skills section by stating, “Skilled in AutoCAD, with a proven track record of designing highly efficient piping systems that support reliable industrial operations,” or “More than 10 years of experience successfully managing complex flow control projects that strengthen on-time delivery.”
3. Emphasize quantifiable achievements
Ownership is one of Flowserve’s core values. We look for associates who take responsibility for their commitments to deliver strong outcomes that contribute to shared success. Quantifiable achievements showcase the tangible impact you’ve made in previous roles. Mentioning these measurable results demonstrates your ability to deliver outcomes and drive value for the organization. Don’t forget – emphasize accomplishments that directly relate to the job you’re applying for.
For example: For a project management role, you might write, “Led a cross-functional team across engineering and supply chain to complete a $5 million infrastructure project six weeks ahead of schedule, resulting in a 15% increase in operational efficiency,” under your job duties.
4. Proofread your resume
Proofreading your resume demonstrates that you have the attention to detail that hiring managers are looking for. Carefully review the content to catch and correct spelling or grammatical errors, and make sure your experience and skills are clearly and effectively communicated. It’s also good to have someone else review your resume – fresh eyes can often spot overlooked errors and suggest ways to make it stand out, such as how your experience could contribute to Flowserve’s overall purpose, culture and future growth.
5. Keep it to no more than two pages
Keeping your resume to no more than two pages makes it easier for recruiters to understand your career story, learn more about you and highlight the unique technical and interpersonal strengths you could bring to Flowserve. To help keep your resume concise, focus on only featuring the work experience and skills that are most aligned to the position you’re applying for.
6. Limit AI tools
Artificial intelligence can be a helpful tool to generate ideas and tailor your resume by identifying the specific skills, accomplishments and keywords you should highlight that are related to the role you’re applying to. However, we encourage candidates to use AI thoughtfully rather than completely relying on it. We want to see your authentic experiences, skills and accomplishments expressed through your resume. Our people are at the core of who we are, and we value individuals who are comfortable being themselves – both on paper and in the workplace. Ultimately, candidates remain responsible for ensuring that all content is accurate, truthful and representative of their experience.
