Flowserve Earns “America’s Safest Company” Award, Highlights Successful Sustainability Program

Flowserve receives a 2010 "America's Safest Company" award from EHS Today magazine.

DALLAS, October 6, 2010 – Flowserve Corporation (NYSE: FLS), a leading provider of flow control products and services for the global infrastructure markets, today announced that it received a 2010 "America's Safest Company” award from EHS Today magazine. The honor was presented to Flowserve at an awards ceremony in San Diego, California, on Monday, October 4, 2010.

"This recognition is especially meaningful to us, because it reflects the strong Flowserve commitment to conducting safe and sustainable operations around the world,” said Mark Blinn, Flowserve president and chief executive officer. “There is nothing more important to us than the workplace health and safety of our 15,000 employees."

As part of the award, Flowserve was recognized for implementing rigorous safety policies and practices in its global industrial manufacturing operations. These successful safety initiatives have reduced the Flowserve lost-time accident rate to about one lost-time incident per 1 million hours worked.

Stephen Wilson, corporate director of safety, health and environmental affairs, accepted the award for Flowserve. "This award is the culmination of 20 years of diligent safety work conducted at Flowserve and its predecessor companies,” said Wilson. “During that time, we have received more than 750 National Safety Council awards and reduced our lost time accident rate by about 95 %.”

In addition to its daily focus on workplace safety, Flowserve is also committed to environmental stewardship, including recycling and waste reduction programs that meet the highest levels of emissions control and pollution prevention. “Workplace safety is not the only area in which we have successfully made sustainability a priority,” said Wilson. “We are committed to improving processes, minimizing waste and preventing pollution across the globe, all in order to positively impact the communities in which we live and work."

Throughout the last 20 years, the Flowserve focus on environmental protection has led to an estimated cumulative rate of 90 % reduction in solvent emissions into the air, 50 % reduction in solid waste, and a 70 % reduction in hazardous waste generation at Flowserve facilities around the world. “Flowserve has proven that a strong focus on sustainability and good business performance go hand-in-hand," said Wilson.

EHS Today is a leading industry publication dedicated to the management of risk in the workplace and the environment. The “America’s Safest Companies” award was founded in 2002. To be considered for the list, companies must demonstrate: support from management and employee initiative; innovative solutions to safety challenges; injury and illness rates lower than the average for their industries; comprehensive training programs; evidence that prevention of incidents is the cornerstone of the safety process; good communication about the value of safety; and a way to substantiate the benefits of the safety process.
