Flex Wedge Gate Valve

The uniform section wedge offered today is the esult of improvements to the solid, I-section and slotted configurations that have been supplied over the years.

The Flex-Wedge Gate Valve is generally supplied in sizes from 21/2 to 54 inches in diameter and pressure ratings ranging from 150 to 4500 pounds.

Base material can be:

  • carbon steel
  • stainless steel
  • or a wide range of special alloys

Various combinations of seating and stem materials are available to meet specific customer requirements.

Valves with pressure ratings less than 600 pounds are bolted bonnet type valves. Pressure ratings of 600 pounds or higher may have either bolted or pressure seal bonnet type closures.

In order to meet specific customer requirements and provide maximum flexibility, Flowserve can supply either a pressure seal or a bolted bonnet type closure on Flex-Wedge Gate Valves with pressure Class 600 or higher.

The pressure seal design incorporates a metal-to-metal seal that becomes tighter as the pressure increases. The initial preload deforms the taper on the soft iron gasket to mate with the taper on the bonnet. The thin knife-edge on the gasket is wedged tightly between the body and the bonnet.

The shallow angle insures that the gasket is sealed tightly with only a small upward force on the bonnet. Once the initial seal is created, the body/bonnet joint will remain leak free regardless of thermal or pressure conditions in the valve.

After the joint has been assembled, there is no further need to adjust bonnet cap screws. For customers requiring a back-up sealing system, Anchor/Darling?s pressure seal design can be furnished with a seal weld provision.

Bolted bonnet joints are designed using the latest analytical techniques. This method insures a flange design of sufficient strength to prevent leak-producing deformation. All joints can be designed to use any one of the available gasket materials:

  • metallic asbestos
  • ring joint
  • o-ring, etc.

For customers requiring a back-up sealing system, the bolted bonnet design can be furnished with a seal weld provision.
