Flowserve Technical Services can help plant operators restore or even improve station efficiency through assessments of steam supply, circulating water, safety and auxiliary cooling water systems. This is accomplished by using advanced data collection tools and methods coupled with highly sophisticated thermodynamic and hydraulic modeling techniques.
As the name suggests, boiling water reactors (BWRs) generate electricity by using nuclear fission to boil the reactor coolant water which in turn drives a steam turbine attached to a generator. The steam is then condensed and returned to the reactor vessel to start the cycle again. System operating pressures and temperatures are maintained at a lower level than that of pressurized water reactors or fossil-fueled power plants.
The advantages of the BWR over that of the pressurized water reactor (PWR) are:
- Fewer components than PWR, a cost savings
- Operates at one half the pressures and temperatures of the PWR, resulting in less costly piping, pumps, etc.
- Pressure vessel suffers less from radiation embrittlement, resulting in longer vessel life
- Lower risk of rupture that would result in loss of coolant
In addition to a full line of pump, valve, and seal products for BWR service, Flowserve offers full Hot Shop repair and upgrade capabilities for safety related and contaminated equipment. This is performed in a controlled environment in accordance with 10CFR50 Appendix B and/or 50-C-Q-quality programs. The Hot Shop is involved in reactor feed pump up-rates, condensate and heater drain re-bowls, reactor coolant pump re-manufacturing and nuclear seal rebuilds.
Pressurized water reactors (PWRs) are the most commonly used type of nuclear reactor worldwide. The PWR operates differently from boiling water reactors (BWRs) in that, instead of boiling to steam, the primary coolant remains in a liquid state due to high operating pressure. Reactor coolant pumps circulate the radioactive primary coolant water through a separate steam generator that in turn delivers uncontaminated steam to the drive turbines.
PWRs offer some significant advantages over BWRs. First, they allow more stable plant operation due to their tendency to produce less power as temperatures rise. Secondly, they keep the steam turbine loop separate from the primary reactor loop to prevent equipment in the steam side of the plant from becoming contaminated.
