Flowserve recently announced an order to supply process pumps for use in the carbon dioxide capture process at Mississippi Power's Kemper County integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) power station project. Designed to capture approximately 65% of the CO2 emissions that would normally be released into the atmosphere, the Kemper County IGCC project is an important step in the development of clean coal technology and emissions control. To learn more about the order, read the Flowserve Receives Pump Order for Mississippi Power's Kemper IGCC project press release.
Another Flowserve project in the works is our recently received order for more than 1500 Vogt gate, globe and check valves. The valves will be installed in three solar receiver steam generators used to power a solar thermal power plant being developed in the western United States. In this particular installation, thousands of mirrors concentrate sunlight onto boilers, which are elevated on 460-foot towers, producing superheated steam at temperatures of up to 1022° F. The steam is piped to a conventional steam turbine, converted into electricity and can provide enough clean energy to power 140,000 homes.
Additionally, our manufacturing, service and repair sites worldwide are constantly seeking ways to improve processes, minimize waste and promote pollution prevention in our own facilites. When Flowserve acquires a new facility, environmental and safety challenges are given first priority during the integration process. New facilities are expected to be fully compliant with our stringent, award-winning environmental/safety standards within two years.
Our plant in Arnage, France, is one example of a Flowserve facility that is proactively changing the way they handle waste. In 2010, employees began analyzing the amount of waste that was being produced at the plant and in the offices, a significant amount of which was coming from wood pallets. Today, all waste wood is taken to one central area where pallets in good condition are sold for re-use and the remaining wood from used and damaged pallets is removed for recycling. Last year, the Arnage facility recycled 141 tons of wood, 17 tons of cardboard and 4 tons of plastic. Thanks to the robust process the team developed, the entire site is not only committed to recycling but also to reducing their dependency on wood, paper and cardboard.
From reducing the carbon footprint of our facilities around the world to providing industry-leading products to customers that support their sustainability and environmental protection programs, Flowserve is committed to a better tomorrow.
